The focus on lossless audio format is misplaced: analog cassettes are such low fidelity and have so many playback problems that your first priority should be getting a good transfer from tape. The best way is to play the tape into your computer and then process it with a DAW (digital audio workstation) software that has a plugin to remove hiss and rebalance the audio to put back the highs you lost recording to tape in the first place. Then once you have a good copy, you can decide what kind of encoding to use. But VBR 128 or 192 mp3's both are better than the cassette had in the first place (depending on noise reduction method and metal tape.)
